While most of the tutorials are about technical skills, there are some qualities that can’t be taught, such as curiosity, creativity, and a sense of aesthetics. These qualities must come from within ourselves and they will stand the test of time. A camera is simply a tool to express ourselves. As photographers, we see beauty in life, even in unexpected places.
Curiosity has always been a natural instinct that has guided me in many situations. I have always had a thirst for knowledge and I am curious about how others do things. This insatiable curiosity has continued to drive me throughout my life.
Take, for example, the story behind this photo. It was taken during a trip to a farm in Taiwan back in 2010. It had been pouring with rain throughout the week and we were pretty much stuck at the hotel. What would you do in this situation?

I looked around and ended up spending hours taking photos of raindrops. I played around with the fast shutter speed and captured a splash that formed a crown shape. It was fun! Since then, I have learned to appreciate rainy days.
It turns out that having limitations can actually be a catalyst for creativity. In fact, many of the most innovative inventions, artwork, and solutions to complex problems have been born out of restrictions. Be willing to deviate from the norm and approach tasks in a unique way. View small challenges as enjoyable endeavors.
Developing a sense of aesthetics can take time, but it’s a skill that can be learned through practice and observation.
I used to collect posters and postcards of movies and music gigs. Just about any kind of cover art. Whenever I see graphics online that I like, I take a screengrab and save it to a folder. (or Pinterest) I study colors, spacing, rhythm, and composition. It’s my source of inspiration.
You can build your own collection too. Any sort of visual art that is aesthetically pleasing. Put it in a folder, and understand what makes it tick. Keep the creative juices flowing.
By studying the work of other photographers, experimenting with different techniques, and taking plenty of photos, your aesthetic sense will begin to develop.
